SMILE Academy Skills Training 2023

We raised £5000 to train 25 young women who would otherwise have no hope or future. 

Smile Academy is part of the Smile Charity Village where small children are given a home and an education, and older girls are trained in skills such as tailoring and hairdressing. The money we raised will provide the support for 25 of this year’s class of trainees. 

The money will also provide them with the equipment they need to set themselves up in small businesses on completion of their training. This is the 2nd year group that PDH has helped to fund and we have seen that this training is life changing for them.

As refugees return to their homes and communities in South Sudan, it is vitally important for their health and wellbeing that they have access to fresh garden produce. 

The money we raise will be divided equally between the Mothers Union who support women and families, and the community of Kajo Keji Christian College to enable them to grow fresh vegetables to promote self sufficiency and to supplement their diet.

Smile Children's Charity Village Clinic

We raised £5000 to build a clinic and save lives!

Good health and nutrition contributes to stronger physical and mental growth.

In Uganda today, the leading cause of deaths among children is Malaria followed by other communicable diseases. Many children die due to delay in providing treatment to the patient. When a child feels sick they are only provided painkillers to relieve the pain and fever; shortly after that the disease comes back in a full force that in most cases kills.

At Smile Children’s Charity Village, when the children get ill, they are taken to the nearby clinic for treatment. However, this treatment is very expensive compared to the cost of the medicine from the pharmacy. During the rainy season, children frequently get ill  from malaria because of the prevalence of mosquitoes attracted by surrounding bushes and stagnant water and treatment for malaria. 

Setting up a clinic at Smile Children’s Charity Village is a much more cost effective way of providing treatment. 

A Smile Children’s Charity Village Clinic will: 

1. Provide treatment to the children at very low cost, hence cutting the expenses on treatment by about 60%.

2. Provide treatment not only to the children at the village, but to the children in the school at a reduced cost lower than what is charged in the clinics in the nearby town.

3. Provide treatment to the vulnerable community especially children and mothers at reduced cost

4. Raise additional income for SMILE. 

5. Share the love of God with all those who come to seek treatment

5. After 5 -10 years, the clinic could be developed into a full hospital to provide health services to the whole community

Projects Delivering Hope invites you to join us for a fabulous evening of live music and entertainment with renowned singer, comedian and raconteur Jonathan Veira. This amazingly talented and versatile international singer is coming to Devizes, Wiltshire as part of his ‘Unlockdown Sessions Live Tour.’ You can expect a stunning evening of music and laughter. Jonathan is essentially a musical chameleon – performing songs of great diversity to an incredibly high standard – which quite possibly makes him unique in the world of entertainment. 

The Jonathan Veira concert is part of a national tour and promises to be one of the most enjoyable evenings you will experience as we sit back and enjoy Jonathan’s unique style and amazing voice amid a whole range of musical genres and fun. With a voice like melted chocolate he sings songs from Billy Joel to gospel songs and everything in-between – nothing seems too hard for him!  Ballads, blues, rock n roll, jazz and even opera – everything sounds completely authentic and exhilarating. Accompanying himself with amazing dexterity, his glorious singing frequently moves people to tears and then they later find themselves weeping with laughter!

During the evening there will be a short introduction to Projects Delivering Hope and an opportunity to support our work in South Sudan. 

When the Lockdown occurred, Jonathan was obviously unable to do live concerts. Undeterred, he started an online streamed concert that still goes live nearly every Sunday evening for two hours. This highly entertaining show has become much more than ‘just a concert’. Jonathan’s wonderful singing and piano playing, cheerful chat and banter with his wife Sue, guests on Zoom or in the room have made this compulsive viewing for so many.

JV Live from the Steinway Room has kept many people connected and sane during the Lockdown period and beyond. Winning a BBC award for the show has been a well-deserved bonus. These concerts are now Jonathan doing what he does best in an Unlockdown situation!

PDH Trip - February 2023

Three of our trustees, Adrian, Andrew & Rachel visited Uganda to meet with our local South Sudanese operating partners. This is the first trip we have been able to make in 4 years due to COVID and we were joined by 3 PDH supporters who helped us lead some seminars and business workshops.

Business Training in Macedonia Church, Palorinya Refugee camp

This was a great opportunity to train refugee business people from South Sudan. We provided business training in marketing, cash flow and record keeping and it was great to hear feedback on how this will help them.

Visiting Projects in Belamaling Refugee Camp: Bread Ovens & Savings Groups

It’s always good to hear about the benefits of projects after they have completed. And we did just that with the Bread Ovens project, plus the Savings Groups formed after the 2019 business training. According to the people we met, they have created a source of income that has enabled children to go to school, goats to be bought and mental health crises to be averted.

Spending time with our partners to understand their current challenges was really important to help us prioritise the next set of PDH projects to focus on. We had an evening at Mama Cecila’s house, a dinner with Simon Taban Benson and the Diocese of Kajo Keji staff and a meal with Rev. Dr James Lule, the Principal of Kajo Keji Christian College

SMILE Children’s Charity Village,  – meeting with our partner, Rev. Francis Candiga

This was set up to look after refugee orphans from South Sudan “Every child deserves a smile.” 

We have been partnering with SMILE for a year and funded a chicken farm to enable them to sustain themselves and also funded tailoring & hairdressing training for over 30 young women.

Graduation Ceremony of 32 tailors & hairdressers

Education is something we take for granted in the UK. But for those from South Sudan, it is a luxury. That’s why seeing 32 young women refugees graduate in tailoring and hairdressing was such a great conclusion to one of our projects.

We also gave them sewing machines / hairdresser starter kits. Many are orphans and told us how this training has literally transformed their lives. We were even given a live goat & 100 bananas as a thank you gift at the Graduation Ceremony!

Business Training for the tailors, hairdressers & other business people

We had an amazing day delivering business training under a mango tree!

The tailoring and hairdressing graduates said they had learnt how to set up their new businesses and local business owners gave feedback on how much it helped them. “I now understand where I have gone wrong in the past and I can take forward this learning in the future”. We were excited to hear their desire to collaborate together to create savings groups and reduce costs.

Flying with Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF)

MAF is a flying charity which operates in developing countries to bring help, hope and healing through aviation to people living in isolation and poverty. In Uganda and South Sudan, we rely on MAF to fly us to remote locations.

Projects Delivering hope raised over £2,000 to feed those displaced by the recent Kajo Keji massacre.


As the rebel fighting had reduced, many South Sudanese had returned from the refugee camps to their homes in Kajo Keji. However, a group of cattle herders with guns have driven 1000s of cattle through the Kajo Keji villages to take over the land to feed their cattle.

The cattle herders have massacred 28 of the local people. Currently 2700 have now fled their villages and are in hiding in a nearby church.


There is not enough food for everyone, so we are raising £1000 over the next 2 weeks by which time the UN refugee agency should be able to provide ongoing support. Can you help?

Thanks to your generous donations, we have provided £2,000 towards solar panels for Kajo Keji College to enable important education to continue. This was in addition to the £2,000 provided previously towards college repairs.

Kajo Keji Christian College
  • Kajo Keji Christian College has University status and provides courses in Theology, Education and Business Studies and is based in Romoggi, South Sudan
  • The college had to move to a temporary location in January 2017 when civil war broke out and lives were in danger and the college was ransacked
  • As the South Sudanese return home, we want to help repair the college so that they can continue the training which is essential to the future of South Sudan as it moves into a time of peace and rebuilds fragile communities

We want to raise funds for solar panels to harness energy from the sun – the only source of power to allow the college to operate its electrical systems.

Unfortunately, in Palorinya Refugee camp, food rations have been cut down by 1/3. This means that the previous 12kg of food per person per month has been reduced to 8kg. Because of this, people have started moving back to Kajo Keji in South Sudan to prepare land for agriculture. 

Please help and donate here to provide the basic sanitation that is needed, and stop the spread of the Coronavirus.

Our thanks to all those who contributed!

Coronavirus has had a massive impact on the South Sudanese refugees living in Northern Uganda. Due to the greater demands on the United Nations food programmes, supplies on the refugee camps in Uganda have been reduced by 30%. Our partner working there spoke of ‘outcries of starvation and desperation from our people’.  Thanks to the help of our supporters we have been able to provide many people in the refugee camps with enough food to enable them to get through until the harvest.

Due to the close proximity of people and poor health systems there was a real risk that Coronavirus would spread quickly in the refugee camps. 

We were able to use some of the funds raised to pay for 4,000 bars of soap, hand sanitisers, masks and PPE to help reduce the risk of the spread of the virus.
