Smile Academy Skills Training 2026

Smile Academy is part of the Smile Charity Village where small children are given a home and an education, and young people are trained in skills such as tailoring, hairdressing, mechanics and driving.

Following on from our 2024 Skills Training project we have funded a further 35 students.

Pig Rearing

We have set up a pilot project with 6 single mothers or grandmothers who have returned to Kajo-Keji from the refugee camps, and are struggling with livelihood to support their children or grandchildren in their schooling. Each of the women received 2 piglets, with a shelter and all the necessary feed and equipment. The provides them with a kick-start for a self-sustaining venture; when mature, the piglets will be bred and their subsequent piglets sold to provide income. This process will be repeated to provide much needed funds for these women to feed their families and pay their children’s school fees. If the pilot project is successful we will extend it to other women in Kajo-Keji.

The cost of this pilot project was $8,200 and was funded entirely from Projects Delivering Hope’s general reserves.

Village Savings and Loans Associations

Based on the success of a community savings project set up in 2019 we have now enabled a further 12 Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA’s) by providing each of them with saving kits and offering business training for small scale business owners in Kajo-Keji. This is a financial empowerment project for both men and women groups (15-25 members) to enable them to acquire easy to access loans to boost their business initiatives. The members of the groups will acquire small, self-managed loans from the common pooled funds (savings). The members might decide to save for a year and distribute (share-off) their savings/profits for that year’s cycle. In other groups, the members may buy some shares or take loans (as agreed by the group) and repayment is normally done with small interest.

The groups are supported with a start-up kit including:

Lockbox – a secure container for storing members’ savings (Cash and shares) during meetings.
Calculator – for calculating savings, loans, and profits (to promote transparency)
Membership Cards and Passbooks – for each member to track their savings and transactions
Ledgers/Record Books: – this is the overall management group records – depending on how the group set it up
$50 per group start up fund.

The cost of this project was $5,600 and was funded entirely from PDH general reserves.

In Memory of Denise

In November 2025, our long-term supporter and dear friend Denise, sadly passed away after a short illness and her family kindly invited donations in her memory to be given to Projects Delivering Hope in support of our projects.

In 2019, Denise joined us on a trip to Uganda, where we ran a 4-day business training course for young refugees and so the trustees agreed together that the fund should be used to create opportunities for training in business skills. A bursary fund was set up to assist students on the Business Diploma Course at Kajo Keji Christian College and the students that this helps will be a living legacy of Denise’s life and work.

We are so grateful to all who donated and to Denise’s family who so generously supported our work in South Sudan.

Poultry for Christmas

The Mothers Union in the Diocese of Kajo Keji is setting up Poultry Projects in 5 parishes. Each project includes the construction of a 3m x 10m chicken house with surrounding enclosure together with feed & feeders, drinkers & vaccines. Chicks will be reared and sold for a profit and the money raised used to purchase further chicks until capacity is reached. Once established, the women will form Community Savings Groups from which individual woman will be able to borrow money to fund their own small businesses, providing themselves with a means of support.

Projects Delivering Hope has already funded the first two parish projects. With our 2025 Christmas Appeal, we are aiming to fund the next two poultry projects at £2,700 each.

Jalimo Boma

In February Bishop James informed us that military confrontation in Julio Boma resulted in 15 families being left homeless after their houses had been burned down. They were sleeping under trees without access to shelter, food, clothing, cooking utensils and other essential supplies. PDH Trustees joined others to provide an immediate response with a grant for emergency supplies from the General Reserve Fund.

We received news that following our support, the Diocese of Kajo-Keji had distributed the following to the 15 families affected: iron sheets, cooking utensils, hand hoes, axes, pangas, beans & groundnut seeds, and clothing. The recipients expressed their joy and gratitude for the support.

Thank you to everyone who has donated to our General Fund which enables us to respond to situations like this.

Brick Making 2025

Kajo-Keji Christian College teaches theology, management & education courses in South Sudan. With around 230 students, financing the running costs, staff salaries, equipment and food are a constant challenge. With many returning refugees returning needing basic homes, the college has identified an income generating project and we have agreed to finance the set up costs.

The project will provide basic brickmaking equipment and materials which will then be sold and the profits used for future batches. This will create employment opportunities for local people as well as an income stream for the college. The college will also be able to use the bricks for future building projects.

Our goal is to raise £2,700, enough to make 100,000 bricks.

We are excited to be partnering with the Smile Academy in Uganda once again in sponsoring young South Sudanese and Ugandan people to learn a trade. The course will provide them with the skills, training and tools they need to set up businesses in Catering, Construction, Driving, Mechanics, Tailoring and Hairdressing. We are inspired to run this again by the wonderful stories we have heard from those who previously had no hope of any education, being given amazing opportunities to support themselves.

Any shortfall to our £4200 target will be covered from the charity’s General Reserves, and any excess will support additional training.

Wheelchair Provision

During our March visit to PDH partner The Smile Village in Uganda this year, we met Joseph and his mum Suzan. Both had serious mobility problems; Joseph’s legs are paralysed and he only has the use of one arm. Suzan can only move around bent double on all four limbs.

This week, Rev. Francis Candiga, the project director has had the joy of presenting them each with a wheelchair so that with assistance, they can now move around their village and attend the services and community events at their church. We send our huge thanks to the kind friends who funded this project – you have made a massive difference to these wonderful people. Thank you!
